Islamabad (HRNW)- The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has imposed an immediate ban on the establishment of new universities and sub-campuses across the country without prior approval.
According to a formal letter issued to vice-chancellors and heads of universities, official permission and security clearance will now be mandatory for setting up any new educational institution or campus.
The HEC clarified that no institution can be established without its approval, and degrees issued by unauthorized institutions will not be recognized or verified.
The commission has also directed universities to halt all activities related to new recruitments, construction, sub-campus development, and land acquisition with immediate effect.
Officials cited concerns such as substandard education, shortage of qualified faculty, and weak infrastructure, particularly in tehsil-level campuses, as key reasons behind the decision.
The HEC warned that in case of violations, the approval of campuses and academic programs may be suspended.
