Deadly Drone Strike on Market Near Khartoum Kills Dozens Amid Ongoing Sudan Conflict

Khartoum (HRNW)- At least 28 people were killed in a drone strike on a crowded market in central Sudan, according to the human rights group Emergency Lawyers. The attack occurred at the Al-Safiya market near Sudari in North Kordofan, where civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, were present. Officials warned that the death toll remains preliminary and could rise.

The region has seen intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with both sides reportedly carrying out aerial attacks as part of the ongoing civil war. Sudari, located about 230 kilometers northwest of Abyad, lies along a strategic east-west land route linking Darfur with the capital, making the Kordofan region a major battleground.

Recent violence has also included attacks on civilian infrastructure, including a school strike that killed two children and damaged a UN aid warehouse. Since the conflict began in April 2023, tens of thousands of people have died and nearly 11 million have been displaced, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The country remains effectively divided, with government forces controlling central, northern, and eastern regions while the RSF holds western and parts of southern areas.
