Washington/ Moscow (HRNW)- The last major nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia, New START, officially expired today, February 5, leaving no active strategic nuclear control framework between the two countries. According to foreign media reports, neither side has agreed on an extension of the treaty nor made progress on an alternative agreement. Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Russia remains committed to maintaining strategic stability through diplomatic channels, but the terms of the expired agreement are no longer applicable. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that both countries are no longer bound by any obligations under New START and may independently determine their future actions. Signed in 2010, New START required the US and Russia to limit the number of nuclear warheads, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and launch systems. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged both nations to quickly negotiate a new nuclear treaty to reduce global security risks and prevent a renewed nuclear arms race.
