Minneapolis, Minnesota (HRNW)- A 37‑year‑old man was shot and killed by federal immigration agents during a large‑scale enforcement operation in south Minneapolis on January 24, 2026, marking the third fatal shooting linked to immigration enforcement in the city in less than three weeks.
According to local and federal officials, the man – identified as a lawful U.S. citizen and gun owner – approached officers with a handgun and resisted disarmament, prompting the agents to fire what the Department of Homeland Security described as defensive shots. However, many residents, civil rights groups and local leaders have challenged the federal account, alleging excessive force and lack of transparency in the shooting.
The incident comes amid ongoing Operation Metro Surge, a wide‑ranging immigration enforcement campaign ordered by the Trump administration. Earlier in January, federal immigration officers fatally shot Renee Good, a 37‑year‑old U.S. citizen in her vehicle, which triggered large protests and demands for federal agents to leave Minnesota.
Governor Tim Walz and other state officials have condemned the shootings and urged federal authorities to halt the immigration operation, citing concerns over civil rights, violence and untrained enforcement tactics.
