Afghanistan Faces Deadly Winter Tragedy as Heavy Snowfall and Rains Kill 61

Kabul (HRNW)- Heavy rains and snowfall over the past three days have created a severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, claiming the lives of at least 61 people and injuring over 110, while hundreds of homes and crops have been destroyed.

According to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, 458 houses have collapsed, dozens of domestic animals have died, and crops on several hundred hectares have been ruined. Most deaths were caused by roof collapses, avalanches, and sub-zero temperatures, which have particularly affected the elderly. Transportation in northern and remote regions has been severely disrupted, making it difficult for aid teams to reach stranded communities.

The Taliban authorities have instructed citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and have distributed essential rations to those trapped in remote areas. Authorities warn of further loss of life and property if the extreme weather continues.
