Muscat (HRNW)- Oman has proposed a new regional framework for the joint management of the Strait of Hormuz, under which regional countries would collectively oversee the strategic waterway instead of Iran monitoring it alone.
According to a report by the British news agency Reuters, a Gulf source said the proposal envisions Iran participating in the management of the Strait of Hormuz alongside other regional countries rather than exercising unilateral oversight.
The report added that the proposal has received support from several Gulf countries, although the governments concerned have not yet released official details.
According to sources, the proposed system is modeled on the Strait of Malacca, where countries and shipping companies using the route voluntarily contribute fees to cover the costs of maritime management, environmental protection, navigation improvements, and search and rescue operations.
Analysts believe that if approved, the plan could improve the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, help reduce regional tensions, and strengthen the stability of global oil and trade supply chains.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, through which a significant share of global crude oil and natural gas shipments passes. Rising regional tensions in recent months have increased uncertainty in international shipping and energy markets.
