Oslo (HRNW)- Marius Borg Høiby, 29, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted in two sexual assault cases, following a lengthy court process that drew significant public attention.
According to international media reports, the ruling has sparked widespread debate in Norway regarding accountability, the rule of law, and how individuals connected to the royal family are treated under the justice system.
Marius Borg Høiby was first arrested in August 2024 in connection with a domestic violence incident in the Frogner district of Oslo. Subsequent investigations expanded the scope of the case after additional allegations emerged, leading authorities to examine around 40 separate charges, including sexual offences, rape allegations, drug-related offences, and traffic violations. However, not all charges were proven in court, and he was ultimately convicted on two counts of sexual assault.
Prosecutors had sought a sentence of seven years and seven months in prison, along with a fine of 580,000 Norwegian kroner. After reviewing the evidence, the court sentenced him to four years in prison.
Høiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Morten Borg, born on January 13, 1997. He was raised within the royal household after his mother later married Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in 2001, although he does not hold any royal title or official position within the Norwegian royal family.
It was also noted that in mid-2024, Høiby publicly admitted to assaulting his then-girlfriend and damaging her property while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. However, he has denied the rape allegations and maintains that he will appeal or challenge the court’s findings.
