Cairo (HRNW) – Egypt’s growing refugee and migrant population fleeing conflict zones is putting increasing pressure on aid agencies and public services, prompting Cairo to call on Europe for greater financial support.
According to media reports, Egypt has urged European countries to contribute more to the cost of hosting refugees, as the number of displaced people continues to rise into the millions.
Experts say Europe relies on Egypt to curb illegal migration routes, while Egypt depends on European funding to manage a refugee crisis that costs more than 8.5 billion euros annually.
Andrew Geddes, Professor of Migration Studies and Director at the Migration Policy Centre of the Robert Schuman Centre, told Euronews that Egypt’s engagement with the EU has increased significantly as European governments seek to reduce irregular migration flows.
Humanitarian agencies have also warned of a widening funding gap in Egypt, particularly as the war in Sudan continues, adding pressure alongside refugees from Syria, Palestine, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia, and Iraq.
