Cities Must Be Empowered Under Article 140: Farooq Sattar

KARACHI (HRNW) – Senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan, Dr. Farooq Sattar, has issued a significant statement regarding local government powers and constitutional amendments, asserting that cities must be granted their rightful authority under Article 140 of the Constitution.

Response to Sindh Chief Minister’s Remarks

While speaking to the media in Karachi, Farooq Sattar responded to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah’s recent comments suggesting that the Prime Minister had misled MQM regarding the 28th Amendment.

Sattar replied with a sharp metaphorical rebuttal:

“Murad Ali Shah should know that this time, we are not just following the truck—we are sitting in it and we are the ones driving it.”

Meeting with Prime Minister and “Good News” for Karachi

Farooq Sattar revealed that the MQM leadership is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif again within the coming week. He shared the following key points:

  • The Prime Minister has personally assured that the federal government will focus intensely on resolving Karachi’s long-standing issues.

  • Residents of Karachi can expect “good news” very soon.

  • The federal government has taken MQM’s demands regarding urban rights seriously.

On the Removal of Former Governor Kamran Tessori

Discussing the change in the Sindh Governorship, Farooq Sattar disclosed that the Prime Minister acknowledged the removal of Kamran Tessori as a “political necessity.” However, the Prime Minister reportedly lauded Tessori’s public services and contributions during his tenure.

The MQM leader emphasized that his party remains committed to strengthening the local government system and ensuring that power is devolved to the grassroots level through constitutional safeguards.
