Karachi: New Date Announced for Crackdown on Unauthorized Number Plates; Citizens Given Until April 1

KARACHI (HRNW) – The Sindh Police has announced an extension to the deadline for the city-wide crackdown against motorcycles and vehicles displaying illegal, fancy, or unauthorized number plates. Following the directives of Additional IG Karachi Azad Khan, the formal commencement of this enforcement campaign has been rescheduled to April 1, 2026.

Extension of Deadline and Campaign Objectives

According to a spokesperson for the Sindh Police, the initial deadline for the crackdown was set for March 30. However, to facilitate citizens and ensure maximum public awareness, the grace period has been extended to April 1. The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure the writ of law and mitigate security risks, as unauthorized number plates significantly hinder the identification of vehicles during criminal investigations.

Indiscriminate Legal Action

The police have clarified that from April 1, strict legal action will be taken against the following violations without discrimination:

  • Private and Fancy Number Plates: The use of any plate other than the government-approved official design will be considered a legal offense.

  • Driving Without a License: Alongside the inspection of number plates, individuals operating vehicles without a valid driving license will also face legal consequences.

  • Security Concerns: Authorities maintain that non-standard plates assist criminal elements in concealing their identity, making this crackdown a vital step for public safety.

Urgent Appeal to Citizens

The Karachi Police spokesperson has urged all citizens to immediately install Government-Approved (Official) Number Plates on both small and large vehicles. This appeal aims to help residents avoid legal complications, heavy fines, or the impounding of their vehicles once the campaign begins.

This follows an earlier warning issued on March 24, where Additional IG Karachi Azad Khan emphasized that the use of private or fancy plates is legally prohibited and that the police will now maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding this violation.
