NATO Chief Warns Iran is “Close to Becoming a Threat to Europe”

BRUSSELS (HRNW): NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stern warning today, stating that Iran’s military advancements have reached a point where they pose a direct and imminent security risk to the European continent. Speaking in the aftermath of a ballistic missile interception involving Turkey, Rutte described the attempted strike as a “serious and absolutely condemnable” event that demonstrates why the alliance must remain at its highest state of readiness. While he clarified that Article 5—the alliance’s mutual defense clause—is not currently being invoked, he emphasized that the successful neutralization of the threat by NATO air defenses proves the effectiveness of their “360-degree” territorial protection. The NATO chief expressed explicit support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s military campaign aimed at degrading Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, noting that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a catastrophic threat not only to the Middle East and Israel but to the global order.

Rutte further acknowledged that while NATO as an organization is not a direct combatant in the ongoing strikes, various individual allies are providing “key enabling support” to ensure that Iran can no longer project lethal force or export instability through its missile programs. He noted that it remains difficult to predict exactly how the current escalation will conclude, but the primary objective is to ensure that Iran never again possesses the capacity to threaten its neighbors or international security. Despite the deepening crisis in the Middle East, the Secretary General reassured the international community that NATO would not be distracted from its commitments in Eastern Europe. He reaffirmed that the alliance remains fully committed to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, asserting that European security is now inextricably linked across multiple fronts and that the United States and its allies “know exactly what they are doing” to maintain global stability.
