Surabaya (HRNW)- At least five people were killed and 41 others remain missing after a passenger ferry caught fire near Madura Island in Indonesia, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.
According to media reports, the ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 was carrying 271 passengers and crew members when a fire broke out for reasons that are still unknown on Sunday morning.
Rescue officials said 225 people were safely rescued, while five people lost their lives and 41 remain missing. Search and rescue operations are continuing to locate those who are still unaccounted for.
The ferry was traveling from Surabaya in East Java Province to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the incident occurred.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and investigations are underway.
Madura Island is located off the northeastern coast of Java, Indonesia.
