ISLAMABAD (HRNW) – In a major blow to the general public, the prices of several essential and life-saving drugs have been drastically increased across the country. The most alarming surge has been recorded in the price of insulin, a critical medication for diabetic patients.
Unprecedented Surge in Insulin Prices
The price of insulin delivery devices and associated medications has seen a staggering increase. Notably:
-
HumaPen Ergo II: The price of the HumaPen Ergo II has reportedly jumped from a previous low of Rs 220 (for older models/parts) to a current market rate of Rs 4,720.
-
Widespread Impact: Experts warn that such steep hikes in insulin-related products will significantly burden millions of diabetic patients who rely on these daily.
Other Essential Medicines affected
The hike is not limited to diabetic care. Several other commonly used medicines have also seen their prices revised upward:
-
Sodalac Pack: Increased from Rs 530 to Rs 620.
-
Surbex-Z (Multivitamins): The price for a pack of Surbex-Z has risen from Rs 480 to Rs 510.
-
Bividox: Increased from Rs 500 to Rs 600.
-
Thyronorm (Thyroid medication): The price has seen a massive jump from Rs 85 to Rs 290.
-
Tivair: Increased from Rs 805 to Rs 930.
Reason for the Hike
Pharmaceutical sources attribute these increases to the ongoing deregulation policy, which has allowed manufacturers to adjust the prices of non-essential drugs. Additionally, the rising cost of raw materials and fluctuating exchange rates have contributed to the surge in the prices of life-saving medications.
Healthcare advocates have expressed deep concern, stating that these “inflationary” prices will make basic healthcare inaccessible for the low-income segment of the population.
