Curfew Imposed After Mosque Attack Sparks Communal Tensions

Birgunj (HRNW)- A curfew has been imposed in Birgunj following rising tensions after an attack on a mosque in the southern border city. The unrest erupted after a video went viral on TikTok, containing content deemed offensive to religious sentiments.

Police detained two youths involved in making the video and attempted to mediate, but the mosque was vandalized and religious books desecrated. This sparked protests among the Muslim community, followed by demonstrations from the Hindu population. Protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and raised slogans, leading police to fire tear gas and detain several participants, while some officials were injured.

The curfew, initially imposed in the evening, was later extended with only limited relaxation hours. Police have met with community leaders from both religions, urging restraint to restore peace.
