Petroleum Dealers Association Defers Nationwide Strike Set for March 26

ISLAMABAD (HRNW): In a significant move to prevent a looming energy crisis, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has announced the postponement of its nationwide strike, which was scheduled to begin on March 26, 2026. The decision comes as the country navigates a complex regional security situation and a tightening fuel supply.

PPDA Chairman Abdul Sami Khan stated that the association has decided to defer the closure of petrol pumps indefinitely to avoid adding to the hardships of the general public. He emphasized that given the current national and regional circumstances, the association chose a path of caution and social responsibility over immediate industrial action.

Background and Future Course

The strike had been called to protest stagnant profit margins, which dealers argue have become unsustainable due to rising operational costs and recent spikes in petroleum levies. While the shutdown is on hold, the core issues remain unresolved:

  • Margin Demands: Dealers have been advocating for an increase in their profit margins from the current ~2.68% to a promised 8% to cope with inflation and increased investment costs.

  • General Body Meeting: A high-level meeting of the PPDA’s General Body will be convened soon to deliberate on the next steps and evaluate the government’s response to their demands.

  • Ongoing Negotiations: The association confirmed that dialogue with government authorities is ongoing, and any future decision regarding a strike will only be made after a thorough review of the negotiation progress.

The postponement provides a temporary sigh of relief for motorists and transport sectors across the country, as a total shutdown of the nation’s approximately 15,000 petrol pumps would have brought logistical operations to a standstill.
