KARACHI (HRNW): The escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have begun to impact Pakistan’s energy security, triggering a severe gas crisis in the country’s largest city. Karachi is currently grappling with a massive gas shortage after the supply of Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) was disrupted, leaving residents without fuel for several hours.
The crisis intensified today as gas supply was suspended across most parts of the city starting at 9:00 AM. Despite the passage of more than five hours, many areas remain completely without gas. According to sources within Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), the system is facing a significant deficit due to the sudden interruption in RLNG imports, which are vital for maintaining pressure in the distribution network.
Currently, SSGC is providing approximately 650 MMCFD (Million Cubic Feet per Day) from domestic natural gas resources. However, the shortfall of 80 MMCFD—previously fulfilled through RLNG—has dealt a severe blow to the system’s stability. Officials warn that as long as the international supply chain remains affected by the regional instability, maintaining consistent gas pressure in Karachi will remain a significant challenge.
