Islamabad (HRNW) – Goods transport associations from across Pakistan, led by Pakistan Goods Transport Group Chairman Malik Shahzad Awan, held an emergency meeting to discuss the continued increase in petroleum prices and its impact on the transport sector. The meeting concluded with the decision to increase goods transport freight charges by 15%.
Speaking after the meeting, Malik Shahzad Awan said that the price of diesel has increased by Rs. 65 per liter over the past 10 days, making it increasingly difficult for transporters to continue operations.
He stated that participants unanimously decided to launch protests against the federal and provincial governments over the continuous rise in petroleum prices, arguing that daily increases have placed an unsustainable financial burden on the transport industry.
Malik Shahzad Awan warned that if the government fails to address the transporters’ demands, a nationwide strike could be announced at any time.
He said transport associations across Pakistan are united in demanding a reduction in petroleum prices and criticized the authorities for failing to provide meaningful relief to the goods transport sector.
The transport leader also called on the government to offer relief in toll taxes, withholding tax, motorway charges, and traffic fines, adding that commitments made to transporters following the nationwide strike in December should also be fulfilled.
In addition, he urged the federal and Balochistan governments to take effective measures to improve the law and order situation in the province, stating that security concerns continue to affect transport operations.
