Russia Claims Naval Drone Sunk Ukrainian Reconnaissance Ship in Danube Delta, Kyiv Confirms Attack

Moscow (HRNW)- The Defense Ministry has claimed that its forces have sunk the Ukrainian reconnaissance ship “Simferopol” through a naval drone attack. According to the ministry, the incident took place in the Danube River Delta, part of which is located in the Odessa region of Ukraine. The attack resulted in the sinking of the Ukrainian ship, the statement said. This is the first successful attack on the Ukrainian fleet by a Russian naval drone, which was confirmed by the Russian news agency TASS, citing a UAV expert. Ukrainian authorities also confirmed that the ship was targeted. According to a Ukrainian Navy spokesman, one officer was killed in the attack, several were injured, while some sailors are missing and are being searched for. Most of the crew were safe. “Simferopol” was a Laguna-class medium-sized ship, which was designed for radio, electronic, radar and optical reconnaissance. It was launched in 2019 and inducted into the Ukrainian Navy in 2021. According to independent sources, it was the largest Ukrainian naval vessel launched since 2014.

Russia, on the other hand, claimed that it had also targeted a large drone facility in Kyiv in two missile strikes. According to Ukrainian politician Igor Zinkevych, the facility was being used to produce Turkish-made drones and train crews.
