New York/Geneva (HRNW) – The world is observing World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026 on 30 July, with a renewed call for stronger global action to prevent human trafficking, protect victims, and dismantle criminal networks involved in exploitation. The United Nations has highlighted that human trafficking remains a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights affecting millions of people worldwide.
The theme for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026 is “Trapped Behind the Scam”, focusing on the growing threat of human trafficking linked to forced criminality, where victims are deceived through fake job offers and forced into online scam operations controlled by organized criminal groups.
According to the United Nations, traffickers are increasingly using digital platforms, social media, and fraudulent employment opportunities to recruit and exploit vulnerable individuals. Many victims are promised legitimate work abroad but later find themselves trapped, controlled, and forced to participate in illegal activities.
UN officials have called for stronger international cooperation among governments, law enforcement agencies, technology companies, and financial institutions to identify trafficking networks, prevent online exploitation, and ensure justice for survivors.
Human trafficking takes many forms, including forced labour, sexual exploitation, forced criminal activities, slavery-like practices, and other forms of abuse. The crime often targets vulnerable communities, including migrants, women, children, and individuals seeking employment opportunities.

- Protection, rehabilitation, and legal assistance for survivors
- Public awareness campaigns against fake jobs and online scams
- Responsible use of technology to prevent exploitation

HRNW urges citizens to remain cautious of suspicious overseas employment offers, unverified recruitment agencies, and online schemes that may place individuals at risk of trafficking and exploitation.
