Ukraine Claims Russian Drone Strike Damaged Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility

Chernobyl (HRNW) – Ukraine has claimed that Russian forces carried out a drone attack on a nuclear fuel storage facility located near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

According to media reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the alleged Russian drone strike targeted a facility associated with nuclear fuel storage in the vicinity of Chernobyl.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reportedly said that the attack caused significant damage to the storage building. The facility is located approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Ukraine’s state nuclear agency, Energoatom, stated that no nuclear fuel was being stored in the affected building at the time of the incident. Officials added that a fire resulting from the strike was successfully extinguished and no casualties were reported.

Authorities said the situation remains under control and that there was no immediate indication of a radiation-related emergency following the incident.

As of now, Russia has not publicly commented on Ukraine’s allegations regarding the reported drone strike.

The claim comes amid ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with international organizations continuing to monitor the safety and security of nuclear-related facilities in the region.
