Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will compensate for damage to ships, cargo, and related equipment in the Gulf region using frozen Iranian assets under US control.
According to the foreign news agency Reuters, President Trump made the announcement in a statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social, saying that any future damage to ships, cargo, or related property would be compensated from Iranian funds held by the United States.
Trump stated, “From today and until further notice, any damage to ships, cargo, or related equipment will be paid for from Iranian funds in the custody of the United States.”
The announcement comes at a time when global shipping and energy supplies are under significant pressure due to ongoing tensions in the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Red Sea. In recent weeks, several commercial ships and oil tankers have reportedly come under attack.
Although President Trump did not specify which Iranian assets or how much money would be used, the United States has frozen billions of dollars in Iranian assets under various sanctions over the years.
According to experts, if Washington implements this announcement, it could further escalate legal and diplomatic tensions between the United States and Iran.
Analysts also believe the move could raise new questions regarding international law, financial regulations, and the treatment of sovereign state assets.
