Trump Says US and Iran Are Close to Agreement, Open to Direct Talks with Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei

Washington (HRNW) – US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to speak directly with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei if necessary and claimed that Washington and Tehran are close to reaching an agreement on key issues.

In an interview with NBC, President Trump said that a successful agreement with Iran could help bring an end to months of conflict and tension between the two countries. He stated that the United States seeks an arrangement under which highly enriched uranium would be removed and eliminated through a mutually agreed process.

According to Trump, if a comprehensive agreement is reached, both countries could cooperate in implementing measures related to Iran’s nuclear program. However, he warned that if negotiations fail, the United States would consider stronger measures to address its security concerns.

The US president also claimed that American surveillance capabilities allow Washington to closely monitor developments in Iran and that the United States remains committed to maintaining a military presence in the region while diplomatic efforts continue.

Discussing the prospects for a permanent ceasefire and broader agreement, Trump said only a few issues remain unresolved. He asserted that Iran has indicated it does not intend to develop nuclear weapons, while Washington seeks additional guarantees preventing Iran from obtaining such weapons through any means in the future.

Trump further stated that Iran’s current leadership appears more willing to engage in practical discussions and confirmed that he would be willing to hold direct talks with Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei if such engagement could help finalize an agreement.

The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts and negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions, addressing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and promoting stability in the Middle East.
