Washington (HRNW) – US Senator Bernie Sanders has announced his opposition to a provision under consideration in Congress that he says would expand military cooperation between the United States and Israel while increasing financial obligations for American taxpayers.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Sanders argued that the proposal would effectively channel additional US resources toward Israeli military programs through Pentagon-related joint production agreements.
According to Sanders, the measure is being presented as a reduction in direct military aid, but he contends that it would ultimately result in more taxpayer funds being directed to Israel. He stated that he intends to oppose the proposal and work to prevent its approval.
The provision is reportedly included in the US National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is currently being debated in Congress.
Other lawmakers have also voiced concerns regarding the proposal. Members of the House of Representatives, including Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie, have reportedly expressed reservations and opposition to the measure.
The debate comes amid broader discussions in the United States regarding military assistance to Israel, Middle East policy and the allocation of federal resources. Some lawmakers have called for greater scrutiny of foreign military commitments and the long-term financial impact on American taxpayers.
Political analysts note that differing views within Congress on military aid and foreign policy continue to shape discussions surrounding the defense legislation.
