National Assembly Passes Domestic Abuse Protection Bill, Declares Mental and Verbal Torture a Criminal Offense

Islamabad (HRNW)- The National Assembly has passed the Social Security of Wife, Children and Elderly Persons Bill, under which domestic abuse, verbal abuse and mental and psychological torture have been declared a punishable offence.

According to the passed bill, this law will be applicable to wife, children, elderly people in the house, adopted children, transgender people and people living together. The bill has clarified that abusing wife, children or other people living in the house will also be considered a crime.

Under the bill, emotionally, psychologically or mentally harassing or disturbing any person in the domestic environment will also be a punishable offence.

According to the law, those guilty of this crime can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years and a fine of up to one hundred thousand rupees or both.

The aim of the bill is to prevent domestic violence and abuse as well as provide legal protection to the weaker sections of the society.
