Islamabad (HRNW)- Former Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Dr. Pervez Butt, recipient of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, and Sitara-e-Imtiaz, passed away at the age of 84.
Dr. Pervez Butt was a former Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and one of the founding members of Pakistan’s strategic and nuclear programme. A distinguished mechanical engineer, scientist, and administrator, he dedicated more than four decades of his life to advancing Pakistan’s nuclear science, technology, and strategic capabilities. His visionary leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to national service left a lasting impact on the country’s scientific and technological development.
He joined the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in May 1963 and served the institution with distinction for more than 43 years. During his career, he held several key scientific, engineering, and administrative positions, playing a vital role in developing Pakistan’s indigenous nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear power programme, engineering expertise, and strategic capabilities. He also contributed significantly to the peaceful application of nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture, industry, research, and education.
In recognition of his outstanding leadership, Dr. Pervez Butt was appointed Chairman of PAEC in 2001. During his tenure until 2006, he provided strategic direction to the Commission and oversaw the continued expansion of Pakistan’s nuclear science and technology programmes.
Following his retirement from PAEC, he continued serving the country as Federal Secretary for the Ministry of Science and Technology (2006–2008) and later as Advisor on Nuclear Energy to the Planning Commission of Pakistan until 2013. Until his passing, he served as Advisor to the National Command Authority (NCA) and the Strategic Plans Division (SPD), providing valuable guidance on strategic and nuclear affairs.
In recognition of his exceptional services to Pakistan, Dr. Pervez Butt was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (1998), Hilal-e-Imtiaz (1999), and Nishan-e-Imtiaz (2015), among the country’s highest civilian honors.
