Lahore (HRNW)- The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a report on the damage caused by the ongoing monsoon rains across the province.
According to the report, the major causes of deaths include the collapse of dilapidated houses, lightning strikes, and electrocution. So far, 29 people have lost their lives during this year’s monsoon season, while 203 others have been injured.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, 52 houses have been partially damaged due to the rains, while six livestock have also died. Director General PDMA Umar Abbas Mela has directed district administrations to remain on high alert in view of the third spell of monsoon.
The DG PDMA warned of the risk of urban flooding and flash floods, instructing all concerned institutions to ensure preventive measures. He added that the best possible medical facilities are being provided to the injured under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister.
Under the Punjab government’s compensation policy, financial assistance ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs5 million is being provided to the families of the deceased. The DG PDMA also instructed Deputy Commissioners to strictly enforce Section 144 along rivers and streams.
PDMA has urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the rainy season and avoid living in old, unsafe, and dilapidated buildings. According to the report, most fatalities occurred due to the collapse of weak structures and roofs.
