Tehran (HRNW)- Iran has claimed that its advanced air defense system successfully shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone in southern Iran amid ongoing tensions near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iranian officials, the operation was carried out by air defense units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iranian authorities stated that the U.S. Reaper drone was attempting to approach the conflict zone from the northern Persian Gulf when it was detected and destroyed.
The Iranian statement said the drone was shot down in airspace near the city of Jam in Bushehr Province.
Iranian media reported that the incident occurred while military activities were underway in the region and at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.
On the other hand, the U.S. military did not immediately confirm or deny Iran’s claim. However, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has acknowledged conducting military operations near the Strait of Hormuz and against Iranian targets in recent days.
Military analysts note that the MQ-9 Reaper is one of the United States’ most advanced unmanned aerial vehicles, widely used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions. Any confirmed loss of such a drone would be considered a significant development amid escalating regional tensions.
