New York Court Sentences Taliban Commander Haji Najibullah to 42 Years in Prison

New York (HRNW)- A U.S. federal court has sentenced Haji Najibullah, a Taliban commander involved in the kidnapping of American journalist David Rohde, to 42 years in prison.

The court found the 50-year-old accused guilty of aiding terrorism and hostage-taking. According to U.S. media reports, Haji Najibullah kidnapped American journalist David Rohde and two of his companions in Afghanistan in 2008 and held them captive for approximately seven months.

During their captivity, the hostages were reportedly kept under harsh conditions while various demands were made for their release.

During proceedings in a New York federal court, prosecutors argued that Haji Najibullah was not only involved in the kidnapping but had also participated in planning and supporting attacks on U.S. military convoys operating in Afghanistan.

After reviewing evidence and witness testimony, the court convicted the accused and handed down a 42-year prison sentence. U.S. officials described the verdict as an important step toward justice for the victims.

David Rohde, a prominent American journalist, was abducted while reporting in Afghanistan in 2008. He later escaped from Taliban captivity along with his colleagues after months in detention.
