Nasiriyah (HRNW) – At least 21 people were killed and 19 others injured after a passenger bus overturned and caught fire near the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, according to local authorities and media reports.
Police and medical officials stated that 21 passengers were confirmed dead either at the scene of the accident or after being transported to nearby hospitals. Rescue teams responded immediately to the incident and transferred the injured for emergency medical treatment.
Health authorities reported that many of the injured sustained severe burns and that several victims remain in critical condition.
Following the tragedy, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered an investigation into the causes of the accident and directed relevant authorities to submit a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Officials are examining possible factors that may have contributed to the accident, while emergency services continue to assist victims and their families.
Road accidents remain a significant safety concern in several parts of Iraq, and authorities have repeatedly emphasized the need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
