Lahore (HRNW)- The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide alert over the threat of a severe heatwave during the Eid-ul-Adha holidays and urged citizens to take precautionary measures.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, temperatures are expected to remain 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal in most districts of Punjab.
Temperatures in cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sialkot may rise to 42 degrees Celsius, while southern and central Punjab districts such as Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha and Jhang could experience temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius.
PDMA warned that the heatwave intensity may continue even during nighttime hours. Director General PDMA Umar Javed appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight between 10 am and 5 pm and to consume plenty of water and cold beverages.
He advised people to wear light-colored cotton clothes and cover their heads with hats or umbrellas when going outside. Parents were instructed to keep children and elderly family members indoors during extreme heat conditions.
PDMA also directed travelers to check vehicle tire pressure and radiator water levels before journeys. The authority further stressed the careful use of water to prevent shortages during the heatwave.
The spokesperson appealed to citizens to arrange water for birds and animals due to the intense weather conditions. Butchers, livestock traders and sanitation workers were instructed to adopt special safety measures during Eid-ul-Adha, while livestock owners were urged to regularly sprinkle water on animals to protect them from extreme heat.
According to PDMA Punjab, clean drinking water and temporary shade facilities are being ensured at livestock markets, while medical and veterinary camps are also being established to handle emergencies involving humans and animals.
DG PDMA Umar Javed said citizens should remain aware of heatstroke symptoms and seek immediate medical help in emergencies. He added that people can contact the PDMA helpline 1129 for heatwave-related assistance and information.
