Mega-Corruption Allegations Resurface Over BRT, Local Trains, Cooperative Societies, and Municipal Bodies

Karachi (HRNW): Allegations of mega-corruption involving the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, local trains, cooperative societies, and various municipal institutions have once again taken center stage in the provincial capital. According to political circles and insider sources, the Government of Sindh and relevant accountability institutions are facing severe criticism over their handling of high-profile suspects.

Controversy Surrounding Zameer Abbasi and BRT Irregularities

Serious allegations have emerged suggesting that instead of immediately arresting former Project Director Zameer Abbasi in connection with multiple cases, authorities allegedly allowed him an opportunity to evade arrest and subsequently secure legal relief.

Furthermore, sources reveal that questions are being raised regarding the scope of investigations into the BRT project, particularly concerning advance payments and financial irregularities. Critics argue that accountability efforts appear restricted to a few lower-tier individuals, and they are urging investigators to target the primary orchestrators to bring the full facts to light. Similar allegations of financial malpractice concerning the local government and cooperative societies continue to be debated across various investigative forums.

Scrutiny of Former DG Anti-Corruption and Municipal Bodies

In the wake of these unfolding events, the role of Imtiaz Abro, the former Director General (DG) of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Sindh, has also come under intense scrutiny. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and official responses from the concerned authorities are still awaited.

Concurrently, reports indicate a resurgence in investigations targeting municipal institutions. Accountability bodies are refocusing on:

  • Illegal Appointments and Promotions: Probes into unlawful inductions and out-of-turn promotions within municipal tiers.

  • Fake Schedule of Establishment (SOE): Investigations into the creation of fraudulent and unauthorized institutional frameworks.

  • Administrative Appointments: Scrutiny regarding controversial postings within the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and various Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs).

Sources suggest that numerous high-ranking officers and municipal-level officials are likely to be summoned as investigative bodies intensify their focus. Political and administrative analysts note that if a transparent and impartial inquiry proceeds, it could lead to major revelations, official summons, and potential arrests. However, the final determination of guilt remains strictly within the jurisdiction of the investigative and judicial organs.
