Karachi (HRNW)- The controversy surrounding alleged encroachments on Karachi’s historic recreational site, Hill Park, has intensified as Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab stated that the disputed plot presented during the inquiry does not exist in the original layout plan of the area.
Speaking to the media, Murtaza Wahab said that the builders involved in the matter had presented lease documents linked to PECHS. However, according to the original layout plan, the disputed plot number has no existence.
He added that under a 1974 notification, the total area of Hill Park is approximately 56 acres and that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has never allotted any portion of the park’s land to an individual or private institution.
The issue has sparked a heated political debate in Karachi, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), MQM-Pakistan and Jamaat-e-Islami exchanging statements over the ownership and protection of the park’s land.
According to the mayor, KMC has initiated a comprehensive land survey to determine the exact boundaries of the park and establish the facts surrounding the dispute.
Murtaza Wahab warned that strict action would be taken if any violation of the approved layout plan by PECHS or any other entity is established. He emphasized that encroachment or illegal construction on Hill Park land will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The mayor further stated that KMC is committed to protecting public spaces and will take all necessary legal and administrative measures to safeguard Hill Park. He added that the ongoing inquiry and land survey are aimed at bringing complete transparency to the matter.
