Karachi (HRNW)- Water supply to Karachi has been temporarily disrupted following a forced power shutdown by K-Electric at the Dhabeji pumping station, causing a significant reduction in water availability across the city.
According to a spokesperson for the Water Board, K-Electric suspended the electricity supply at 6:30 pm on May 30 to carry out repairs on a technical fault in Power Transformer No. 1 at the Dhabeji grid. As a result, 10 out of the 21 pumping units at the station were shut down.
Officials stated that the disruption has severely affected Karachi’s water supply system, leading to shortages in several areas of the city.
The spokesperson added that K-Electric initially informed the Water Board that the shutdown would last for only one hour. However, no final timeline has yet been provided regarding the complete restoration of electricity.
According to the Water Board, Karachi is currently facing a water shortfall of approximately 54 million gallons per day (MGD), while some pumping stations are being operated partially through emergency backfeed arrangements to maintain limited supply.
The administration has appealed to citizens to use water responsibly, avoid unnecessary wastage and conserve available resources until normal operations are restored.
