Thousands Attend First Taraweeh Prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem Despite Restrictions

Jerusalem (HRNW)- Tens of thousands of Muslims in occupied East Jerusalem, despite Israeli restrictions and security barriers, flocked to the Al-Aqsa Mosque to perform the first Taraweeh prayer of Ramadan.

With the announcement of the sighting of the moon, devotees moved towards the first Qiblah and the mosque’s premises were filled with worshippers until late at night. The prayer processions passed through the streets, gates and security checkpoints, prostrating before Allah.

Rows of people lined the inside of the mosque, while worshippers crowded around the Dome of the Rock. The Isha and Taraweeh prayers were led by Imam and preacher Sheikh Yusuf Abu Sunaina, with each prostration becoming a symbol of patience, perseverance and hope.

The first Taraweeh night proved to be a crossroads of tears, prayers and spirituality. Although a ceasefire has been announced, the wounds of Gaza and the ongoing operations in the West Bank have kept the atmosphere mournful. In such circumstances, the arrival of Ramadan brought a message of courage and hope to the Palestinian people.
