Berlin (HRNW)- The German government announced on Thursday that it will admit 535 Afghan nationals who have been stranded in Pakistan despite having previously been assured asylum in Germany.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrandt told the RND media network that Berlin wants these cases to be processed “as soon as possible in December” so that the refugees can enter Germany without further delay.
The Afghan nationals were accepted under a refugee resettlement program launched by the previous German government. However, they have remained stranded in Pakistan since conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office in May and suspended the program, causing uncertainty and delays in their relocation.
German authorities say efforts are now underway to finalize the process and facilitate the safe transfer of the approved refugees to Germany.
