Climate Change Poser Major Threat to Health, Economy, and Food Security, State Leaders Warn

ISLAMABAD (HRNW) – President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in their separate messages on World Environment Day, have warned that climate change has evolved into a monumental threat to human health, the national economy, and food security. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for immediate and coordinated actions at both national and global levels to ensure environmental protection.

Message from President Asif Ali Zardari

Highlighting the significance of environmental conservation globally and nationally, President Asif Ali Zardari stated that despite Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country remains at the forefront of nations most vulnerable to climate risks. He expressed deep concern over the rapid melting of glaciers, devastating floods, and intense heatwaves across the country.

To tackle these pressing environmental challenges, President Zardari stressed the following key areas:

  • Resource Conservation: There is an urgent need for the efficient and wise use of water and a significant reduction in waste.

  • Preservation of Nature: Expanding forest cover, ensuring forest protection, and promoting biodiversity have become indispensable.

  • Renewable Energy: Special focus must be placed on accelerating renewable energy projects to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

  • Role of Civil Society: The youth, media, and civil society must play an active and vibrant role in raising environmental awareness.

He further added that environmental protection needs to be integrated as a core pillar of Pakistan’s national policy. Pakistan remains fully committed to international cooperation and climate action, and providing a safe and sustainable environment for future generations is our foremost responsibility.

Message from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to environmental preservation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the international community to protect the planet. He emphasized that safeguarding our environment is a shared global responsibility, and coordinated international actions are vital to overcoming the environmental challenges confronting humanity.

The Prime Minister noted that the floods, droughts, and rapidly melting glaciers observed in recent years reflect the bitter reality that Pakistan is among the worst-hit countries by the impacts of climate change, which has caused heavy human and economic losses to the nation.

The Prime Minister urged the public to:

  • Renew their commitment to adopting eco-friendly lifestyles in their daily routines.

  • Make joint efforts at individual, governmental, and global levels to build a green, eco-friendly, and resilient Pakistan, as protecting the environment for a better future for coming generations is a collective duty.
