Somalia Bans Israel-Linked Vessels from Bab el-Mandeb Strait Following Recognition of Somaliland

MOGADISHU (HRNW): In a major escalatory move, the Somali government has announced a formal ban on all Israel-linked vessels passing through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Response to Sovereignty Violation:

This decision comes as a direct response to Israel’s recent announcement to officially recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland and appoint a resident ambassador there. The Mogadishu government has condemned Israel’s move as a “blatant violation of Somalia’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Protecting National Interests:

Somali authorities stated that the blockade of the strategic waterway for Israeli shipping is a necessary measure to protect national interests. They emphasized that any attempt to undermine the unified status of Somalia would be met with firm diplomatic and strategic repercussions.

Global Maritime Impact:

Experts warn that this development significantly heightens tensions in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for global trade and energy supplies.

  • Strategic Chokepoint: The strait serves as a gateway between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal.

  • Regional Stability: International observers are closely monitoring the situation, fearing that this move could disrupt global supply chains and lead to further maritime confrontations in the region.

The Somali government has reiterated that its waters will remain closed to any entities that disregard its international borders and domestic laws.
