Toll Tax Mandatory for All Vessels Passing Through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran Announces

TEHRAN (HRNW): In a major strategic move amidst rising regional tensions, Iran has announced the implementation of a new control system requiring all maritime vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to pay a toll fee. This development is expected to have significant implications for global trade and energy markets.

New Control System and National Sovereignty

Ebrahim Azizi, Head of the Iranian Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, confirmed the decision in an interview with Russian media:

  • Mandatory Toll Fees: Under the new regulatory framework, every ship traversing the Strait of Hormuz will be required to pay a designated toll fee.

  • Effective Management: Azizi stated that the government aims to establish full control and effective management over this vital maritime route to safeguard national interests.

  • Distrust of the U.S.: He expressed a profound lack of confidence in the United States, asserting that Iran must take independent steps to manage its territorial and strategic waters.

Restoration of Oil Production Capacity

Simultaneously, Iran is working to repair energy infrastructure damaged in recent escalations. Deputy Oil Minister Mohammad Sadiq provided an update on the recovery efforts:

  • Refining Recovery: Efforts are underway to restore oil refining capabilities affected by U.S. and Israeli strikes.

  • Production Timeline: It is expected that 70% to 80% of the country’s production capacity will be restored within the next two months.

  • Lavan Refinery: A portion of the Lavan Refinery is slated to resume operations within the next 10 days, which will gradually stabilize domestic oil output.

Global Economic Impact

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint. Market analysts warn that Iran’s imposition of a toll tax could lead to increased shipping costs and higher global oil prices. Furthermore, this policy may set the stage for a new diplomatic or military standoff with international powers who view the strait as an international waterway.
