KARACHI (HRNW): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced a comprehensive targeted subsidy package to shield vulnerable segments of society from the recent surge in petroleum prices. During a high-level press conference, the Chief Minister confirmed that the Sindh government will provide Rs 2,000 monthly to every registered motorcyclist in the province.
The Impact of Regional Conflict on Economy
Addressing the global context, Chief Minister Shah noted that the economic strain is a direct consequence of the war imposed on Iran since February 28, 2026.
-
Diplomatic Stance: He mentioned that the federal government expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader and emphasized that Pakistan has made strenuous international efforts to end the conflict.
-
Economic Fallout: “We have been significantly affected by the repercussions of this war,” Shah stated, adding that the tough decisions made by the federal government were necessary and taken in consultation with all provinces.
Breakdown of the Sindh Subsidy Package
The Chief Minister detailed a multi-tiered relief plan aimed at stabilizing transport fares and supporting the agricultural sector:
| Category | Subsidy Amount (Monthly) |
| Motorcyclists | Rs 2,000 |
| Public Transport (Buses) | Rs 100,000 |
| Large Trucks | Rs 80,000 |
| 2-Axle Trucks | Rs 70,000 |
| Small Landowners (up to 20 acres) | Rs 1,500 per acre |
Implementation and Eligibility
The Chief Minister clarified that the subsidy will strictly apply to registered vehicles only.
-
Registered Fleet: Currently, 27,297 buses are registered in Sindh and eligible for the relief.
-
Fare Control: The Transport Department has been tasked with ensuring that transporters do not increase public fares following the receipt of these subsidies.
-
Wheat Procurement: The Sindh government will also handle its own wheat procurement to stabilize food prices.
National Coordination
The relief measures follow an important consultative session led by President Asif Ali Zardari, attended by the chief ministers of all four provinces. Final approvals were subsequently granted in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
“The burden of targeted subsidies must be borne by the provinces,” Shah concluded. “While times are difficult, the government stands firmly with the people.”
