Cases Registered Against Social Media Activist for Derogatory Remarks Against First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari

KARACHI (HRNW): Authorities in Sindh have registered five separate criminal cases against a social media activist and government employee, Azam Chachar, for using derogatory and offensive language against First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari.

Legal Action and FIR Details

The cases were filed at multiple police stations across the province, reflecting the severity of the legal response to online harassment:

  • Locations: FIRs have been lodged at Ghotki A-Section, Pano Aqil, Mirpur Mathelo, and Ubauro police stations.

  • The Accused: Police officials identified the suspect as Azam Chachar, who is reportedly a government servant. He is accused of violating cybercrime laws by using “unbecoming and abusive language” against the First Lady on social media platforms.

Context: Rising Tensions and Past Incidents

This legal crackdown follows a series of security challenges involving the First Lady over the past year:

  • The Jamshoro Attack (May 2024): On May 24, 2025, a violent incident occurred near the Jamshoro Toll Plaza on the M-9 Motorway while Aseefa Bhutto was traveling from Karachi to Nawabshah. Nationalist activists, protesting over water and canal issues, intercepted her convoy near the Benazir Gate.

  • Violence and Vandalism: Protesters reportedly pelted the vehicle with stones and struck it with batons. Footage of the riot, which showed protesters blocking the road and interfering with official security protocols, went viral shortly after.

  • Previous Arrests: In response to the Jamshoro attack, police registered cases against 16 named individuals and 60 unidentified suspects for rioting, road blockage, and interference in state affairs.

Police Crackdown

The Sindh Police have initiated a coordinated effort to apprehend those involved in both the physical attacks and the ongoing digital smear campaigns. Officials stated that using social media to incite hatred or disrespect high-ranking state officials will be met with the full force of the law.
