Two Cargo Vessels Collide Outside Fairway Buoy, KPT Completes Successful Rescue Operation During Eid Holidays

KARACHI (HRNW) – A maritime collision occurred near the entrance of the Karachi Port, outside the Fairway Buoy, involving two large cargo vessels, MV Neva and MV Papu, though fortunately no casualties or injuries were reported. According to Karachi Port Trust (KPT) officials, the incident took place on May 28, 2026, at approximately 2000 hours when the UAE-flagged vessel MV Neva and the Liberian-flagged vessel MV Papu made contact with each other. Following the incident, KPT immediately mobilized a large-scale salvage operation by deploying four of its major tugboats—MT Mithadar, MT Kharadar, MT Lyari, and MT Keamari—which safely towed the affected vessel, MV Neva, to the Karachi Harbor for necessary repairs. Despite the ongoing Eid holidays, the prompt response, sense of responsibility, and high professional expertise of the KPT marine teams averted potential risks to maritime navigation and the marine environment, successfully concluding the operation during the night between May 28 and May 29. The emergency rescue operation was directly supervised by Deputy Conservator Captain Abrar Arif, Harbor Master Captain Babar Salim, and Dock Master Captain Hameed Khan Jadoon, while the container ship MV Papu has been detained at the Outer Anchorage for further legal formalities as KPT authorities conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause and facts of the collision.
