US Warns India Over Russian Oil Purchases, Reliance Pulls Out Amid Pressure

Washington/New delhi (HRNW)– US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned India against strengthening its economy by purchasing cheap petrol from Russia, even threatening Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with heavy tariffs.

Initially, India defended its Russian oil imports as a matter of national security, stating it would not halt purchases at anyone’s behest. However, as pressure mounted, Indian companies—including Reliance, owned by Mukesh Ambani—have stopped buying Russian oil, opting instead to procure from the Middle East or the US at higher costs.

Reports suggest that India had profited by reselling Russian oil at high prices over the years, earning billions, but recent actions have rendered long-term Russian oil contracts effectively void. Analysts say these moves reflect the intense economic and political pressure on India.
