Justice Agha Faisal Criticizes SBCA Over Gul Plaza Tragedy, Questions Accountability

Karachi (HRNW) — During a judicial commission hearing on the Gul Plaza tragedy, Justice Agha Faisal expressed strong displeasure with the Sindh Building Control Authority, raising serious questions about responsibility and oversight.

Justice Agha Faisal remarked that the SBCA’s claim that action cannot be taken without a complaint is “unacceptable.” He highlighted that 15 people lost their lives in the tragic incident and questioned how a high-rise building could be allowed on a plot of just 40 to 50 yards, suggesting that perhaps no formal complaints had been filed regarding the structure.

The judge also inquired about the factors contributing to the fire’s spread and the command of the emergency operations, to which the response was reportedly, “No one!”

DC South Javed Nabi Khokhro informed the court that he was near the scene, arrived immediately, contacted emergency services, and that the SSP City also reached the site. Justice Agha Faisal commented: “Now we share the same view—negligence cannot be concealed.”
