Sindh High Court: Karachi trader files petition against three DIGs and three SSPs; alleges over Rs360 million extortion

Karachi (HRNW) — A Karachi trader has filed a constitutional petition in the Sindh High Court naming three deputy inspectors general (DIGs) and three senior superintendents of police (SSPs), alleging that more than Rs360 million has been extorted from him in the name of police officials. The petitioner, Muhammad Noman, claims that between Rs70 million and Rs80 million was collected from him every week.

Officials named in the petition
The petition lists the following officers:

  • DIGs: Azfar Mahesar, Asad Raza, Irfan Bahadur

  • SSPs: Khalid Mustafa Qureshi, Murtaza Tabassum, Zubair Sheikh

Petitioner’s allegations
Muhammad Noman told the court that a person named Wajid Sheikh blackmails him in the name of the police and regularly collects extortion money. The petitioner has urged the court to order registration of an FIR against the implicated officers, direct the IG Sindh and concerned SHOs to hold an inquiry, and provide protection to the petitioner and his family from the extortionists.

Legal and human rights angle
HRNW stresses that serious allegations of extortion and blackmail linked to state institutions must be investigated transparently, impartially and promptly. Ensuring citizens’ safety, their legitimate business rights and the rule of law is a core state responsibility, while the legal rights of the accused and fair process for all parties must also be guaranteed.
