Punjab Bar Council summons 40 lawyers over alleged misuse of social media

Lahore (HRNW) — The Punjab Bar Council has summoned 40 lawyers for questioning tomorrow over allegations of improper use of social media. Those called include Advocate Fahmim Khokhar, Abdul Mateen, Ahmad Sher Jatt, Shamaila, Usman Ali and others.

The council alleges the lawyers breached Punjab Bar Council rules by posting or engaging in online conduct that has harmed the dignity of the legal profession. Under its disciplinary regulations, the council has authority to investigate and take action; the summonses are intended to collect evidence, record explanations and proceed with any necessary administrative or disciplinary measures.

Punjab Bar Council sources said the summoned lawyers will be given an opportunity to present their accounts and mount a defence as part of the process.

Human rights angle
HRNW stresses that a balance must be struck between freedom of expression and protection of professional integrity. Disciplinary proceedings should be transparent, fair and consistent with applicable rules to safeguard both lawyers’ fundamental rights and standards of the legal profession.
