Doha (HRNW)- Amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing escalation between the United States and Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has made an unexpected visit to Qatar along with a high-level delegation.
According to the Iranian news agency, Qatar continues to play a key mediating role in regional diplomatic efforts, including discussions related to the ceasefire understanding between Iran and the United States.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Abbas Araqchi arrived in Doha to convey condolences from the Iranian government and people following the death of former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
During the visit, the Iranian Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and other senior Qatari officials.
According to the statement, Araqchi is also expected to discuss Iran’s concerns regarding what Tehran describes as the United States’ failure to implement the memorandum of understanding and its continued violations, while also delivering an important message from Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on Sunday, after which Qatar declared four days of official mourning. National flags were flown at half-mast on government buildings, and leaders from around the world sent messages of condolence.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, having overseen the country’s transformation into a leading regional and global player in energy, economy, diplomacy, and education. In 2013, he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, while continuing to play an influential role in national and regional affairs.
