Trump to Meet Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado in Washington Next Week

Washington (HRNW)- U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado in Washington next week, in what would be their first official meeting. Machado, a recent Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is expected to travel to the U.S. capital amid ongoing political uncertainty in Venezuela and international backlash over the interim government following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro. Trump said in an interview that he looks forward to welcoming Machado and saying “hello” during the visit. Machado is a prominent figure advocating for democratic principles, fair elections, and human rights in Venezuela, and the meeting is described by U.S. officials as aimed at supporting democratic transition, economic cooperation, the improvement of the oil sector, and regional peace and stability, as well as strengthening U.S.–Latin American relations.
