UN Highlights Systemic Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones

Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW)- In recent Geneva press briefings and meetings, officials from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have underscored the widespread—often systematic—use of sexual violence in current armed conflicts. OHCHR representatives cited multiple cases where women and girls have been subjected to gang rape, sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence in conflict-affected regions, noting that these abuses are not isolated but part of patterns affecting entire communities. They emphasized that commanders and armed groups must be held accountable and that these violations should not be permissible in any context.

This focus coincides with broader UN mechanisms such as the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, which continuously monitors and reports on sexual violence as a tactic of war and advocates strongly for prosecution of perpetrators and support for survivors under international law.
