December 2007 Karachi Violence Following Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination: Causes and Accountability

In December 2007, following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Karachi witnessed severe unrest, including violent protests, arson, looting, and multiple casualties.

Public Reaction:
The news of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination triggered widespread grief and anger among her supporters, leading to violent demonstrations across the country, particularly in Sindh and Karachi.

Criminal Elements and Political Party Wings:
Reports indicate that along with ordinary citizens, criminal gangs and militant wings of political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Awami National Party (ANP), also participated in the unrest. These groups clashed over city resources and extortion activities, contributing to the chaos.

Security and Government Failures:
The provincial government and law enforcement agencies faced heavy criticism for failing to take timely and effective action, which allowed anarchy and disorder to spread in the city. As a result, the then Home Secretary of Sindh and the Inspector General of Police were removed from their positions.

Several investigations, including international inquiries, were conducted into Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. However, no individual or institution has been definitively held responsible for the specific unrest in Karachi, and questions regarding accountability remain to this day.
