Karachi (HRNW) The Provincial Ombudsperson Sindh had ordered the removal of K-Electric Chief Executive Officer Monis Alvi from his position over allegations of harassing a female employee during office working hours. A fine of Rs 2.5 million was also imposed. According to the Ombudsperson, the complainant’s allegations were found to be proven, and the decision was issued under the law for the protection of women against harassment at the workplace.
However, Monis Alvi challenged the decision in the Sindh High Court, maintaining that the allegations against him were baseless and that he was not given a full and fair opportunity to defend himself in accordance with legal requirements. After an initial hearing, the High Court issued a stay order on the Ombudsperson’s decision, temporarily suspending the removal order.
Subsequently, the matter reached the Governor of Sindh in the form of an appeal, where all records, evidence, and the positions of both parties were reviewed. Following a detailed hearing, Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori set aside the Ombudsperson’s decision, declared Monis Alvi innocent, and granted him a complete clean chit.
After this verdict, the case has once again sparked an important debate in Pakistan regarding harassment laws, their implementation, and the appellate system, drawing strong reactions from various segments of society.
